Dr. Pamela Banks-Lee is an associate professor in the Department of Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science in the College of Textiles. We recently caught up with Dr. Banks-Lee to learn more about her expectations of online students.

What are the main expectations you have for students entering into the NC State Textiles online programs?
PBL: Because our faculty is comprised of professionals with all levels of experience and backgrounds in varying topics related to textiles, we have many different online programs available. Prospective students should explore what each curriculum has to offer and apply to the program that best suits their interests and is relevant to what they want to do in the future. The students who have goals in mind for their education and the drive to be disciplined throughout their studies are the ones who are most successful in our distance learning programs.

What advice do you have for prospective students who have never taken an online course before?
PBL: Participate as much as possible. Some distance education programs can make students feel isolated because they lack the collaboration and discussion components that are a given component of traditional, in-person higher education programs, but that doesn’t have to be the case. As a remote student, it’s up to you to make sure it isn’t. Participating with others, asking questions, getting involved in discussions — those are the best ways to make the most of your education in any environment.

Why is participation so important?
PBL: It will help you to gain perspectives from other students and from NC State’s faculty members. You may not understand a concept the first time it is covered. By asking questions and interacting with others, there is a greater chance of full comprehension and therefore a greater chance of success.

Not only that, but by making sure you are actively participating, it becomes easier to be diligent and motivated to complete your online requirements. Of course online education takes a certain amount of self motivation, but you can also leverage those around you to help motivate you as well.

Check back each month for more opportunities to hear from the professors who help make NC State Textiles online students successful in a variety of fields.
